Funds sought to send body home

FINANCIAL help is needed to return Shawn Williams’ body home to the United States.

Shawn, a US citizen, died last Tuesday when he disappeared while swimming off Suffolk Park Beach. His body was found two days later.

Shawn had married a local girl, Tamara Maloney, in February and was hoping to make his home in Byron Shire.

He died just weeks before he was to return to the US to sort out his residency status for Australia.

Shawn was born in Chicago, but moved with his family to Clarksdale, Mississippi, where his mother still lives. He also has two brothers and a sister living in the US.

His bereaved family are desperately awaiting his arrival.

They want him home for a traditional burial service, next to a brother in Birmingham, Alabama.

Shawn’s friends in Australia said his mother and siblings had found it difficult to comprehend how a swimming beach could be so treacherous, and how a man could lose his life so quickly there.

Repatriating a body presents a huge financial outlay, said Laurie Collins, a friend of the family.

She said $15,000 was required.

The drowning support charity Hannah’s Foundation is appealing for donations.
