Shabana's future to be decided
RACE seven at Casino's postponed meeting today will help trainer, Mark Lynch, decide if Shabana is ready to mix it again with the stars at the Brisbane winter carnival.
If she shapes up as he hopes she will then she'll be aimed at the spring cups on the Northern Rivers.
Shabana, a last-start Coffs Harbour winner, will start in the Pioneer Tavern Wollongbar Benchmark 65 (1900m) with Matthew Bennett aboard.
Today's meeting was postponed last Friday because of rain after originally being switched from the water-logged Ballina track.
"Shabana came to me late last year after a nine-month spell and that long break is what I think she needed," Lynch, a former top Newcastle-based jockey, said.
"She is getting back to her best and it was a good effort to win in open company at Coffs Harbour as a Class Four horse at her last start.
"If she can win at Casino there is a nice race in Brisbane, at the start of the carnival, and then we will see where we go from there.
"The South Grafton cup, possibly the Grafton cup and some of the other cups like Lismore and Coffs Harbour could also be possibilities.
"Matthew thinks she will get 2000 metres or even further and he is the one who knows how to ride her.
"She has to be put to sleep at the tail of the field and saved for one sprint at the finish."
