Sexy Alfa Romeo Giulia aims to win hearts again

ALFA Romeo plans to claw its way back into driving hearts with the sexy Giulia range which starts from $59,895.

Aimed squarely at BMW's 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Alfa Romeo has culled its dealership network to focus on premium customer service and restore core brand principles.

Alfa recognises it got lost with boring Fiat-derived offerings which departed from the marque's historic sporting values, but the four-model Giulia (pronounced Julia) range is pivotal to the revival.

The Guilia is available in four specifications, Giulia, Super, Veloce and range-topping Quadrifoglio, with a choice of three petrol engines and a diesel.

Available in showrooms midway through this month, the base model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 147kW and 330Nm with an ability to reach 100kmh in 6.6 seconds. Fuel consumption is an average of 6.0 litres/100km.

For your $59,895 plus on-roads, the standard equipment includes full leather upholstery, 18-inch alloys, bi-Xenon headlamps, keyless go with start button, fuel stop/start technology, sat nav, dual-zone climate control, automatic wipers, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and reverse parking camera.

There is also Alfa's "DNA" mode selector where the driver can choose between vehicle personalities such as dynamic, natural and advanced economy, seven-inch TFT colour cluster instrument panel, 8.8-inch display infotainment system with digital radio and full Bluetooth connectivity, three USB ports (one in the rear) as well as an eight-speaker audio system.

Those stepping up into the Super model can get the same petrol engine as the base mode for $64,195 or a 132kW/450Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel for $65,895 that can haul from 0-100kmh in 7.1 seconds with average fuel consumption of just 4.2 litres/100km.

Specification improvements include Pieno Fiore leather seats, heated front seats and heated steering wheel, leather-wrapped dash as well as the upper door and armrest, walnut or oak veneer, chrome door sill insert, electric adjustable seats, radar cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross path detection, and diesel models get a dual exhaust tip.

Then there is the Veloce, which starts from $71,895 and comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine pumping out 206kW/400Nm. The 0-100kmh sprint time is 5.7 seconds with average fuel consumption of 6.1L/100km.

Over the Super, it gains adjustable suspension, limited-slip rear differential, 19-inch Veloce alloys and red brake calipers, a deeper front spoiler with mesh inserts, aerodynamic diffuser with twin exhausts, while inside there are aluminium dash inserts and pedals, a sports leather seats and steering wheel, and a 10-speaker, 400-watt sound system.

Option packs available on Giulia, Super and Veloce derivatives.

Under the bonnet is a twin turbo V6 which hammers out 375kW and 600Nm which can haul it from stationary to 100kmh in 3.9 seconds. Fuel consumption is on average 8.2 litres/100km.

Rightly looking the hottest of the range with a full body kit, it has an active aero spoiler, and to help offer the best power-to-weight figure in the range features carbon fibre pieces - including the side skirts and rear spoiler, roof and bonnet.

Other additions are 19-inch forged alloys, and bi-Xenon headlamps with Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS) and automatic high beam, additional leather surfaces with contrasting stitching, additional aluminium and carbon fibre highlights throughout the cabin, leather and Alcantara front sports seats as well as a 14-speaker, 900-watt Harman Kardon sound theatre system.

Colours include white red and black as standard, metallic options include four shades of grey, Monza red, another black, blue and titanium. There are also "tri colour" versions of blue, red and white. Interior trim options include red, black and tan.

On the QV, rightfully, the standard colour is red. Options include black, blue, two grey hues, as well as two tri-colour options in white and red. Inside, there are black, red and green stitching options on the black seats, along with a red or white dash.
