The Northern Rivers cops a fantastic light show overnight

UPDATE TUESDAY: THE Northern Rivers were treated to a spectacular lightening show last night as a low pressure trough moved across the region. 

Some of our readers got some fantastic shots of the sky lit up overnight.

As of 6am, Lismore has receive 8.8mm of rainfall since 9am yesterday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Ballina has accumulated 8.6mm, while Casino had 20.6mm.

Currently, the low pressure trough that caused last night's thunderstorm is moving across to lie back across the Northern Tablelands to the western slopes of the ranges.

Today is expected to be partly cloudy with a high chance of showers, and a chance of another thunderstorm.

UPDATE 10.25PM: LOTS of activity across the Northern Rivers with some spectacular lightning displays in the skies.

The BOM's latest warning was at 9.17pm for large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours.

The next warning is due to be issued by 12:20 am Tuesday.

UPDATE 7.30PM: For people in the North West Slopes and Plains, Northern Tablelands and parts of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Tablelands Forecast Districts.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Scone, Armidale, Tenterfield, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Moree, Narrabri, Sawtell and Dorrigo. 

 

UPDATE 3.23PM: THE Bureau of Meteorology's latest warning is for severe thunderstorms across the Northern Rivers.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Newcastle, Gosford, Tamworth, Walgett, Dubbo, Bourke and Lightning Ridge.

Stay safe in a storm

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 6:25 pm.

 

INITIAL: WHILE a severe thunderstorm warning is current for the lower Northern Rivers, Kyogle is in the path of a small storm cell.

"It's raining in Kyogle at the moment with a bit of thunder," Kyogle council's Janelle McLennan said.

"It's not too bad at the moment."

The warning is for large hailstones, heavy rainfall and damaging wind and was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 2.12pm.
