Seven get the nod

SEVEN Far North Coast junior rugby union players will go on to further representative honours after the Under-14 and Under-15 NSW Country championships at Quays Reserve, Ballina, at the weekend.

Callan Vanderstok, Finn McElroy, Travis Gifford and Ben Schaefer made it from the Under-14 team, while Mark Binge, Matt Bertalli and Nathan Cahill were selected from the Under-15s.

Vanderstok was also named best forward of the championships in the Under-14s.

FNC performed well, finishing third after a gutsy 28-21 victory over Hunter on Sunday afternoon.

They had a narrow 12-10 loss to Central Coast earlier in the day and defeated Central West 31-0 on Saturday.

Illawarra defeated Central Coast 26-5 in the final.

The Under-15s also had a weekend to remember, finishing fifth.

"We only had seven points scored against us all weekend so it was a very tight competition," coach John Lisetto said.

"We're a small and mobile side, so the conditions didn't really suit us in the wet.

"The effort was there, we just needed a few things to go our way."

FNC defeated Central West 28-0 in the play-off for fifth.

They had beaten Mid North Coast 39-0 and lost to Central Coast 7-5.

Hunter took out the final 26-14 against Central North.

Lisetto named Connor Storck, Lewis Allen, Aidan King and Ryan Collett as other players to perform well.
