‘Inaccurate' email raises doubt

CONCERNS have been raised about an email that has been circulated to residents in Ballina and Lennox Head about the proposed rezonings at Cumbalum.

The email is from Louise Owen, who is planning to stand for B ward for Ballina Shire Council.

Landholder Richard Walsh says the email stated the proposed new township area "is 1190 hectares".

But he says this is simply misinformation.

"As shown on the maps on public exhibition at Ballina Council, Precinct B has a total build area of 145.5 hectares," he says.

"Precinct A has a total build area of 75 hectares, giving a total of developable land of 220.5 hectares.

"This is to be developed over 25 years.

"As well, 387 hectares have been designated as open space, parks and sports fields.

"The true facts of the build area of Precinct A and Precinct B are at Ballina Council's planning department on open exhibition."

Mr Walsh said the misinformation was simply a "scare tactic".

The council's strategic services group manager, Steve Barnier, has also expressed concern about misinformation being circulated within the community.

"Not all of the land in each precinct will be developed for residential buildings," he said.

"Some is set aside as environmental protection, agricultural land and there is some for a neighbourhood centre or commercial area."

He said the council was holding an information session on Saturday for people who were seeking further information about the proposed rezonings.

The meeting would be held at the Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre from 10am.

The planning proposals are on exhibition for public comment.

The council has extended the exhibition period and submissions relating to the Cumbalum Precinct A and Precinct B planning proposals will now be accepted until 4.30pm on March 30.
