KRAV Maga isn't pretty according to Toowoomba instructor Grant Gittins, but it's a self-defence system that gets the job done.

What drew him to the self-defence style, which was created in Palestine by the military, was how it "was straight down to business".

"There's nothing but self-defence in it," he said.

"It's very easy to learn because of the way it uses your natural instincts.

"It can also be taught in a very short space of time."

Mr Gittins said there were thousands of different techniques involved and each could be picked up in one or two lessons.

"I think there's a need for it here. It's quite popular especially with the ladies because you don't need to train for years to pick it up," he said.

Mr Gittins, who has been practising Krav Maga and other martial arts for many years, runs classes twice a week in Toowoomba.

WHAT IS IT?

  • Krav Maga is a self-defence system which was developed for military in Israel and nowadays Slovakia which consists of a wide combination of techniques.
  • Techniques include: boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and grappling.
  • It was derived from street-fighting skills developed by Slovakian-Israeli martial artist Imi Lichtenfeld, as a means of defending the Jewish quarter against fascist groups in Bratislava in the mid-to-late 1930s.
  • In the late 1940s after he immigrated to Palestine, Imi Lichtenfeld began to provide lessons in combat training to what was to become the Israeli Defence Force, who went on to develop the system that become known as Krav Maga.
  • It has since been refined for civilian, police and military applications.
