Selectors stick with experience
AUSTRALIAN cricket selectors have stuck with age and experience over the next generation in naming the side for the Boxing Day Test against India at the MCG.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey survived the selection chop, but the news was not as good for youngsters Phillip Hughes and Usman Khawaja, who paid the price for their lack of runs and consistency.
The writing had been on the wall for Hughes, dismissed cheaply for much of the series against New Zealand, with a fighting 20 run-innings in Hobart unable to save him.
Khawaja made more of an impression against the Black Caps, but with the return of Shaun Marsh to the side, the 25-year-old's number-three spot was always in jeopardy.
Joining Marsh in a return to the Test side is experienced seamer Ben Hilfenhaus, back in the squad since Australia's Ashes loss earlier this year.
Despite the selectors push for a more experienced line-up against the Indians, there were still spots for debutantes Ed Cowan and Dan Christian.
