Who sells the region's best seafood?

THE Northern Rivers is renowned for its fresh seafood, and locals are being urged to celebrate this by nominating restaurants, suppliers and retailers in the prestigious Seafood Excellence Awards.

Held every two years, the awards are run by the Sydney Fish Market.

Sydney Fish Market general manager, Bryan Skepper, said the Ballina Fishermen's Co-op took out highly commended for Best Supplier in 2011.

"I expect that the North Coast will be well represented again this time, and that the co-op will be in contention," he said.

"The area is renowned for its fresh, good quality seafood.

"You are so lucky to live in a place where you have beautiful prawns.

"I would really encourage people to nominate their favourite seafood suppliers and restaurants."

There are 10 award categories to choose from, ranging from Excellence in Environmental Practice, Best Supplier NSW, Best Supplier Interstate or Overseas, Inspired by Seafood Young Chef Award, Best Seafood Retailer, the Seafood Business Award and the coveted Star of the Sea Award.

There are also various People's Choice Awards.

"Sydney Fish Market is immensely proud of everybody who is part of this hard-working industry," Mr Skepper said.

 Award nominations close July 8, except for the People's Choice Awards, with public voting closing August 5.
