Man, 88, fined for riding scooter across Gateway Bridge

TOLL road operator Transurban has invoiced a Mundubbera man for crossing Brisbane's Gateway Bridge despite him not having visited Brisbane for more than a decade.

John Endres received a toll indicating he had travelled across the bridge on his mobility scooter but the 88-year-old said he had not been to the Queensland capital for at least 15 years.

Mr Endres was shocked to discover the go via toll invoice in his letterbox in August and immediately thought it was a scam.

"I took the notice down to the Mundubbera Police Station and reported it as a hoax because I know you can never be too careful," he said.

"The notice was for a $4.32 toll and it had escalated to $27.39 and was going up if I didn't pay it.

"People have tried to scam my wife and I before over the phone and I thought for a while this was just another one."

The licence plate number listed on the bill matched Mr Endres' mobility scooter but a Transurban spokeswoman said after Mr Endres queried the invoice it was cancelled.

"Upon investigation the customer service team identified that the notice had been issued in error," she said.

The spokeswoman did not explain how the mistake occurred.
