Science grant applications are now open

SCIENCE expos for passionate young students are just one idea which could share in more $22 million in the next four years, after the Federal Government opened a national grants program for applications today.

The Australian Maths and Science Partnerships Program will put up $5.3 million for education programs to help encourage students towards a career in engineering, technology, maths and science.

Announced in the May budget, the funding program will help fund projects like science expos, summer schools, field trips and teaching interns for schools and community groups.

Science and Research Minister Senator Chris Evans said the program aimed to inspire "the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and engineers".

"We need to inspire young Australians to stick with maths and science at school, then continue that journey at university, and into the jobs of the future," he said.

"This new scheme will fund partnerships between universities, schools and other groups to improve maths and science teaching and learning, in schools as well as universities.

The first round of funding starts next year, with more funding rounds each year until 2016.

The projects most likely to get funding will focus on increasing the number of students taking maths and science in senior high school, improving results and encouraging more study of the subjects at university.

Funding can also be sought to expand successful existing maths or science outreach activities.

Grant applications open on December 30 and close on February 25.For more information, go to: www.innovation.gov.au/AMSPP
