DFAT warns schoolies to play it safe overseas

SCHOOLS are being warned to play it safe if they intend to venture overseas to celebrate the end of their high school careers.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade pointed to its new "Schoolies and Leavers" page on its Smartraveller website to ensure they are well informed on how to keep out of trouble in a foreign land.

Several thousand students are expected to leave our shores for schoolies with most going to Bali, Thailand, Fiji, Vanuatu.

Others may head to Cambodia, Laos and Sri Lanka as volunteer tourists.

Parents will be glad to hear it tells them to take care of their mates and keep in regular contact with their families in Australia.
