Schoolies Hub needs volunteers

IN FIVE weeks, Byron Bay will have thousands of graduates celebrating the end of school, but the Byron Schoolies Hub is short of volunteers.

The Hub provides information and assistance including water, tampons, condoms and first aid to make sure the school leavers enjoy a safe time while in the Bay.

However, this admirable cause still needs 30 more volunteers.

Hub organiser Nicqui Yazdi said one thing that may be stopping people is the need for volunteers to verify ID at a Roads and Maritime Services office to get the required Working with Children check.

"Because we don't have an office in Byron Bay, local volunteers have to travel out of the area to go to the RMS," Ms Yazdi said.

However, she said it was worth the drive to Lismore to get the free accreditation as it was valid for five years.

Schoolies celebrations began in Australia in the 1970s and have been growing in Byron Bay and the Gold Coast.

An estimated 10,000 schoolies will visit Byron Bay over the three weeks of Schoolies.

With history showing it can take just moments for a night out to turn into a tragedy, organisations such as the Hub need all the help they can get to keep those partying safe.

Prospective volunteers can collect registration forms at Byron Youth Service in the Youth Activities Centre, 1 Gilmore Cres or the Byron Community Centre or from hubvolunteers@yahoo.com.au.

The Hub is a marquee that operates 24/7 between November 15 and December 2 at the park at Main Beach.
