Scholarship honour for cadet
A BALLINA air force cadet will fly to Vietnam in September to pay his respects at the many battle sites in the country.
Cadet Under Officer (CUO) Justin Keith was one of 20 high school students throughout NSW to receive the 2012 Premier's ANZAC Memorial Scholarship which will cover the cost of the trip.
CUO Keith has been a cadet at 326 Air Force Cadet Squadron in Lismore for the past four years.
In January he spent three weeks at RAAF Base Wagga Wagga undertaking his cadet under-officer's course; the highest rank a cadet can achieve.
The Year 11 student said his interest in war history had grown since becoming a cadet.
"Ten of us will tour the country and travel alongside a veteran who served there," CUO Keith said.
"We're also visiting Singapore because, as I understand it, the first Australian soldier to die in Vietnam was buried in Singapore.
"The ANZAC legacy means a lot to me and it's up to our generation to carry on the tradition."
326 Air Force Cadet Squadron is holding an information night this Friday from 6pm for interested teenagers and their parents.
The squadron is located on the Army Base in Military Rd, East Lismore.
