Saudis hitting Houthi rebels hard

ABOUT 25 Houthi fighters, including senior militia leader Abu Shehab al-Hamzi, were killed near Najran region on Sunday.

With hundreds of Houthi militias killed in battles on the Saudi Arabia-Yemen border in recent weeks in military raids by the Arab coalition, extensive recruitment efforts by the rebels are under way.

Al Arabia reports that the Arab coalition has been using helicopters against Houthi militants from the mountainous border regions and other fighters loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. He was ousted in 2012.

The Saudi-led coalition has been engaged in a military campaign against the Houthi rebels and their allies in Yemen since March 2015.

The coalition is attempting to bring back to power the internationally recognised government of Yemeni President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi. He replaced Mr Saleh in 2012 but fled to Saudi Arabia three years later after Houthis seized the presidential palace.

Within six months he was back in Yemen in the port city of Aden after Saudi-backed government forces recaptured the city.
