'The Sapphires' wins five AACTA awards ahead of ceremony
OUTSTANDING Australian film The Sapphires has won five of a possible six AACTA awards at a luncheon in Sydney on Monday.
The luncheon, a precursor to the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts' major awards ceremony on Wednesday night, recognised the work of artists and craftspeople working across television, documentary, short fiction film, short animation and feature film categories.
The Sapphires picked up awards for Best Cinematography (Warwick Thornton), Best Editing (Dany Cooper ASE), Best Production Design (Melinda Doring - who also won this Award last year for The Eye of the Storm), Best Costume Design (Tess Schofield) and Best Sound (Andrew Plain, Bry Jones, Pete Smith, Ben Osmo, John Simpson).
Australia's most popular film of 2012 is up for a further 12 AACTA awards on Wednesday night, including best film and a swag of best actress gongs.
