Samantha’s in the zone
FOR the first time in 33 years, a Kyogle woman will represent the district at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney this March.
Physiotherapist Samantha Chilton, 24, was crowned Miss Kyogle Showgirl last year, and at the Zone showgirl competition at Mullumbimby on Saturday, she was proud to walk away with one of two spots to head to the next level of competition.
"It truly was such an honour. The standard at Mullumbimby was very high and I feel very fortunate to be a winner," Ms Chilton said.
"I'm still on cloud nine.
"I had most of the Kyogle Show Society there with me, and it's been 33 years since Kyogle has won at zone.
"I was just so happy that I could do it for them and for me and the community.
"If I won (at the Royal Easter Show), it would be such a great feeling and such an honour.
"I'm a pretty passionate and driven person."
Ms Chilton moved to Kyogle just over a year ago after living in Sydney her whole life.
"I'm definitely a country girl at heart!" she said.
"Since coming to Kyogle I've been made to feel so welcome by the community.
Ms Chilton said she's passionate about the plight of farmers and how outside influences can affect their livelihood.
She said she has witnessed first-hand the "rural-urban divide", and has started a blog for city dwellers to understand what's happening outside their home city.
These issues include how local dairy farmers can go out of business by the choices someone from the city makes when they go to the supermarket.
"I feel very passionate about that and getting that out there," she said.
