Salim Mehajer's Auburn Council suspended by NSW Government
THE NSW Government has suspended Sydney's Auburn City Council and appointed an administrator while a public inquiry examines allegations of councillors misusing their positions.
The decision has been criticised as an "abuse of power" by deputy mayor Salim Mehajer, who had already been suspended for breaches of the Local Government Act.
Last month, NSW Local Government Minister Paul Toole told Auburn Council it had two weeks to "show cause" as to why it should not be suspended.
The council has been attracting controversy for months, with Cr Mehajer frequently making headlines before he was suspended last month.
The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal ordered Cr Mehajer's four-month suspension for his failure to disclose financial interests.
