Salad sends Billy packing
MASTERCHEF favourite Billy Law ran afoul of last night’s guinea fowl pressure test, becoming the first Top 10 contestant to be eliminated.
The 34-year-old web designer was a hot favourite with fans and fellow contestants alike, with many Top 24 contestants tipping Law to make it to the grand final.
Law, Hayden Quinn and Mat Beyer were challenged to cook a salt encrusted guinea fowl with thyme jus as well as two side dishes in just 75 minutes.
He spent too much time trying to salvage his guinea fowl after its protective crust cracked and was sent home on the back of a nearly inedible beetroot salad.
Law said his elimination was not complete surprise. At such a late stage in the competition, even a bad side dish can send someone home.
“It’s down to 10 people in the competition, so it’s definitely a lot more challenging,” he said.
“Everyone is such a good cook now. There’s no such thing as a good cook or a bad cook. Whatever dish you put out not only has to be good but it has to be much better than the others.”
With the New York City trip coming up next week, Law narrowly missed out on the overseas adventure.
“Tell me about it,” he laughed.
“I was just so close. That’s probably one of my only regrets, that I just missed the trip.”
The dessert specialist has plenty of other highlights from the action -acked series, which saw him do plenty of travelling within Australia.
“The Western Australian mine, that was incredible. It was a really tough challenge. It’s one of those experiences you never expect,” he said.
“My highlight was my run in the competition. I felt lucky my experience was a lot more like a roller coaster than the others. I had a few times at the top and a few times right at the bottom.”
Law is now working on his food blog and weighing up his opportunities, with the long-term goal of opening a dessert bar.
He said maturity and experience make Alana Lowes and Kate Bracks the cooks to beat.
“I think Alana and Kate stand a very good chance of making it to the finals,” he said.
“I think a lot of the contestants are pretty young. They just need to focus. They really have that passion; they want to push to make food a career for sure. They just need to get down to it and focus.”
