SAFL clubs back the Demons

NIMBIN wants its own football team. To that end, the iconic village is preparing for an influx of footballers tomorrow when the Summerland Australian Football League (SAFL) holds one of its first pre-season competitions at the Showground.

All six SAFL clubs – Nimbin Demons, Ballina Bombers, Byron Magpies, Lismore Swans, Tweed Coast Tigers and newcomers Coolangatta Blues – will be there.

A shield and a cash prize from the Nimbin Hotel will go to the winners.

The event tomorrow will serve a two-fold purpose: To give sides match-conditioning ahead of the season proper, and to give Nimbin football a boost.

The Demons have put the call out to former players wanting to run around again.

Bouncedown is at 11am with the Demons to play their first game at 11.40am.

Division 1: Coolangatta Blues, Ballina Bombers, Lismore Swans.

Division 2: Byron Magpies, Nimbin Demons, Tweed Coast Tigers.

Draw (games of two 15-minute halves): Game 1: 11am Lismore v Ballina; Game 2: 11.40am Nimbin v Byron; Game 3: 12.20pm Lismore v Coolangatta; Game 4: 1pm Tweed Coast v Nimbin; Game 5: 1.40pm Coolangatta v Ballina; Game 6: 2.20pm Byron v Tweed Coast.

Play-offs (from each division): 3pm 3rd v 3rd; 3.40pm 2nd v 2nd; 4.20pm 1st v 1st.

There will be an Auskick inflatable jumping castle for children, along with showbags and other giveaways from the new Gold Coast Football Club.
