Saffin promises $750,000 for Ballina Marine Rescue tower

MARINE Rescue Ballina will get $750,000 towards its much-needed new search and rescue tower if Labor wins the election this weekend.

Page MP Janelle Saffin and Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement this morning, saying the project will deliver "great benefits to the community".

Ballina Shire Council has recently endorsed a design for the new building and will also contribute funds to the facility.

"Marine Rescue Ballina has been keeping watch over us from its existing coastguard tower for more than 30 years, but the old tower simply does not meet modern standards and even has a bit of a lean on it," Ms Saffin said.

"The new three-storey search and rescue centre will be built on the corner of Lighthouse Parade and Fenwick Drive, giving Marine Rescue Ballina's 65 volunteers a better view of the Ballina Bar and the coastline to the north and south.

"Marine Rescue NSW plans to provide state-of-the-art radio communications in the operations level on the third floor and there will be several teaching spaces on the second floor and at ground level."
