Cuskelly makes a winning return

RYAN CUSKELLY has made a successful return from an ankle injury by qualifying for the first round of the prestigious Sky Open squash tournament in Cairo on Sunday.

Cuskelly, from the Northern Rivers, took just over an hour to dispose of Frenchman Yann Perin in a tough qualifying final 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 to move into a first-round clash against 12th seeded Egyptian Wael El Hindi.

He had earlier beaten another Egyptian, Islam El Fiky, in Saturday’s first qualifying round.

Cuskelly’s win ensured there will be three Australians in the main draw of the Sky Open, which is part of the elite PSA Super Series.

Tenth seed David Palmer takes on English qualifier Tom Richards in the first round, while 15h seed Cameron Pilley faces dangerous Pakistani Aamir Atlas Khan.

The PSA Super Series features 10 tournaments across the world with the top eight ranked players qualifying for the season-ending Super Series Finals.

The 2010 Australian Open, to be held in Canberra from August 9-15, is part of the Super Series for the first time this year.

Palmer is currently seventh on the Super Series rankings with Hobart’s Aaron Frankcomb 15th.
