Face off for deputy mayor

TICKET-MATE councillors Shirley Wheatley and Stuart George may face-off for the job of the Richmond Valley Council's deputy mayor at tonight's council election.

Both ran on Mayor Col Sullivan's ticket at the last election.

“I might have to toss a coin to decide,” Cr Sullivan said when asked who he would be voting for.

Yesterday, Cr George said he would make a final decision about whether to run for the job tonight after talking to his family.

Cr Donella Kinnish confirmed Cr George had telephoned her yesterday to ask which way she would be voting.

She will make a final decision about how to vote once all the nominations were put forward at tonight's meeting.

Current deputy mayor, Cr Wheatley, confirmed she would definitely be running again.

Cr Sullivan said it was great that two candidates of high calibre were showing interest in the job.

“Shirley Wheatley has proven herself as an excellent deputy,” Cr Sullivan said.

The mayor also said it was good to see younger councillors like Stuart George stepping up.

“Perhaps one day he will head up council,” Cr Sullivan said.

Cr Sullivan said it was possible a third councillor may nominate.

Cr Wheatley had run second on Cr Sullivan's ticket until the last election, when she was dropped to third position to make way for Cr George.
