League to kick off season

IT’S late March and local rugby league is back.

The NRRRL’s inaugural Ballina RSL Charity Shield kicks off this weekend with the first round of pre-season football.

All the local teams will be in action and keen to win with the best-performed club over two matches to host a four-game footy feast on April 18. There is also $10,000 up for grabs.

Northern United, grand finalists last year, will will host Mullumbimby today at 4.30pm at Crozier Field, Lismore – a mouth-watering match-up after the teams met twice in the 2009 finals series for one win apiece.

United will trot out a new-look line-up but are sure to maintain their exciting playing style which took them all the way to the grand final in their first year.

Kyogle and Casino will be looking to get off to a positive start to the year when they clash at New Park, Kyogle, at 6pm.

The Bush Turkeys collected the wooden spoon last season but rivals Casino were only a rung above.

Games tomorrow include another derby between Byron Bay and Murwillumbah.

The Mustangs host the Red Devils, who will still be seething after missing out on the finals last year on for and against.

The match at Murwillumbah will kick off at 3pm.

Ballina will host Marist Brothers at Kingsford Smith Park at 3pm and Evans Head will host Grafton Ghosts at Stan Payne Oval, also at 3pm.
