REIGNING champions Richmond Rovers have been bundled out of Football FNC’s Tursa Anzac Cup, after suffering a controversial 1-0 loss to Byron Bay in their semi-final at Stars Field on Tuesday night.
A hotly disputed penalty 15 minutes from full-time allowed Rams striker Sam Owens to slot the winning goal from the penalty spot.
Byron Bay will now meet Goonellabah in the Anzac Day final at Oakes Oval, after the Hornets 3-1 extra time win over a plucky Alstonville in the other semi.
Villa led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a well-taken goal from striker Joel Perkins, but Goonellabah took the game into extra time with a second-half goal from captain Matt Dorigo.
The Hornets wrapped up the win with two goals from in-form striker Dave Arnetts, setting up a final between the two clubs who were the last to win the Cup, before Rovers’ two-year dominance.
