Hurley keen to compete in global roller games competiton

BEVAN Hurley wants to take on the world.

The Mackay product plays roller hockey for Australia and wants to compete in the first International Roller Skating Federation Roller Games Championships in Spain.

"All skating events will be at the one tournament," Hurley said.

"I'm pretty keen to go to Barcelona, where the best hockey is being played at the moment.

"All the European teams are at a much higher level than what Australia is, but with enough training we can match them."

Personally speaking, Hurley said he wanted to focus on improving his fitness and developing more control of his shots.

Before the global event, the next opportunity Hurley has to represent his country is in September, when he will play against New Zealand in a Trans-Tasman test series.

The 24-year-old said he was looking forward to wearing green and gold again.

"It's the best feeling I can ever get," Hurley said.

"My main goal that my Australian coach pushes for me is to play as an attacking player."

Hurley recently moved to Brisbane after being unable to find work as a cabinet maker in Mackay.

"In Brisbane, though, they've got a lot more opportunities down here (to play roller hockey).

"Every opportunity I get to go away with the Mackay team I'm going to be going away with them."

Hurley said he would return to his home town as often as he could to help train the Mackay team.

"We had the sports expo at the start of the year and we were there trying to get young kids into the sport," he said.

Hurley is part of a Mackay team of eight who will contest next week's Townsville Invitational Roller Hockey Championships.

"I'll be playing - and I'm looking forward to it too," he said.
