Roar return to winning ways

BRISBANE Roar have moved into the New Year in a familiar frame of mind after returning to their winning ways against Melbourne victory at Suncorp Stadium last night.

The A-League champions broke a five-game slide with a vintage 3-1 win over the Victory, their first points since November 26.

The win ensured the midnight toast tasted especially sweet after Mitch Nichols, Rocky Visconte and Ivan Franjic all found the back of the net in response to an early marker from Victory striker Harry Kewell.

The win wasn't enough to lift them out of third on the ladder behind Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Heart, but the manner of its execution will give hope that brighter days are ahead in 2012.

And with attacking weapons Thomas Broich, Henrique and James Meyer yet to return from injury, hopes will be high that the horrors of December are now behind them.

In other A-League matches played last night, Central Coast Mariners and Gold Coast United drew a blank and Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory finished 1-1.
