River of family fun this Saturday

YOU JUST can't beat the simple pleasure of a family day out by the river at Woodburn Riverside Festival.

Residents from both sides of the council divide will enjoy the annual grudge match that is the Lismore City versus Richmond Valley council staff raft race.

Program of activities at the festival

Culminating in fireworks, the festival day is jam-packed with activities and entertainment centred on the Richmond River and adjacent Riverside Park at Woodburn.

The theme for the 2015 Festival is 'Bees' - an important local industry. There will be a historical exhibition on this theme in the Hall, as well as an art exhibition by local schools.

There will also be the usual kayak races, markets and a barbecue.

Event organiser Pam Bellingham said she is expecting more participants than ever due to a minor loosening of the river riles.

"This year we are allowing pool inflatables so teams don't necessarily have to make rafts."

The children will love the petting zoo, where they can get up close and cuddly with the animals.

Other highlights

Biathlon. Swim across the river, run back across the bridge. Two age groups - under 16 and 16 and over. Prizes for each age group - $100 first, $50 second.

Council Challenge Race between teams from Richmond Valley and Lismore City Councils

Fancy dress parade - ages 6 and under. Any theme. This will be judged right after the Opening Ceremony at 10am, so come dressed to impress.
