Ripping the waves, avoiding the wipeouts
WHEN 15-year old Mikey McDonagh paddles out at surfing competitions, it's clear he means business.
Cool, calm and competitive, the Lennox Head surfer is renown for his focus and tenacity, qualities he used to great success in the first heat of the day two of the Rip Curl GromSearch at Coolum Beach on Tuesday.
Mikey who came 7th in the U16 division of the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships this year in the Azores, Portugal and has qualified for the 2017 event, surfed with great energy and style to dominate the waves and secure the heat win.
The year 9 student is now focussed on ripping though round three which will see him battle it out against an in-form Darcy De Clouett (Wombarra, NSW).
Mickey said the competition is tough, so he's not presuming on a podium finish.
"There's so many kids who are stepping up with their surfing,” he said.
"I just want to finish the competition with good results.”
Although he's surfed the world, Mickey said his home break was still his favourite place to surf.
"Lennox is a world class wave when it's at its best,” he said.
Competition will resume at 8am with the 12 and under Boys' round two first to kick things off.
