Richmond Valley to vote on returning to NOROC fold
RICHMOND Valley mayor Ernie Bennett has signalled he will put forward a motion for his council to rejoin the Northern Rivers Regional Organisation of Council after key changes were promised at last Friday's NOROC workshop.
Those changes include a committment that all decisions and issues supported by NOROC in the future would require across-the-board consensus, as opposed to voting on controversial issues with the potential to divide councils, such as coal-seam gas.
"If you don't have consensus you're going to split the region, and how can you go out and lobby for a region if you're purposely splitting it through a vote?" Cr Bennett said.
Cr Bennett said he would wait until after the next NOROC meeting on May 3 to ensure the changes were formally undertaken.
