THE Mayor might not be worried, but Lismore MP Thomas George says recent statements by Regional Express airlines make him concerned for the future of the city's airport.

Speaking about comments issued by Rex, made in the wake of an offer to purchase Lismore Airport, saying it was reviewing its operations on the Northern Rivers, Mr George said the airline remained vital to the Northern Rivers community.

"Rex is the only airline which provides a direct daily return business service," Mr George said.

"This service is most important to the community, particularly for business, as it means people can travel and return home without the extra expense of overnight accommodation.

"I would be very disappointed if Rex were to change the current arrangements.  It would be a huge blow to Lismore and the surrounding communities.

"Any changes to the direct business flights would devastate not only passenger numbers through the Lismore Airport, but also the need for the daily return service."

Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell has said she believes Rex will stay at Lismore, saying last week she had information she was unable to share that convinced her the airline, and the airport with it, was safe.

Mr George said he did not know what Cr Dowell's confidential information was.
