Spring Grove mechanic picked to work in Bathurst pit crew

TOM Rann will achieve a childhood dream next weekend when he will be part of the pit crew for Ford Performance Racing FPR at the annual V8 Supercars Bathurst 1000.

Growing up, the Spring Grove man said he religiously watched every Bathurst race with his father Ian but never dreamed he would be part of the action.

"It was a dream, but I never thought I would achieve it and certainly not this quickly," he said.

A Northern Rivers connection has been fostered at FPR between Mr Rann and former Lismore man, renowned engineer Campbell Little.

"Campbell has been great to work with, he has so much knowledge and his advice has been invaluable."

For the past four months, Mr Rann has been working as a tyre technician for Alex Davison's number 18 Falcon, and he will be a driver assistant for both Davison and team mate David Reynolds' cars at Bathurst.

Between monitoring track conditions and changing tyre pressures during the race, to helping drivers change as quickly as possible during pit stops, race days keep Mr Rann extremely busy.

"Each tyre has its own individual pressure and that's adjusted according to what the track and the ambient temperature is at the time, which changes throughout the race."

Having not been to the legendary Mt Panorama circuit before, Mr Rann said he was excited but ready for the challenge.

"Everyone has been saying to me to get a lot of rest this weekend because next week is going to be absolutely massive."

FPR has a fighting chance at victory after David Reynolds came second in one of the closest finishes in the race's 40-year history.

"Mark Winterbottom, Will Davison, Alex Davison and David Reynolds all have experienced co-drivers so the team is in with a good shot at doing well."
