Review: Bridget Jones's Baby

MY 16-YEAR-old daughter has a term for people she admires and relates to. She calls them her "spirit animal". After reading the fourth instalment of the Bridget Jones diaries, I think Bridget might be my spirit animal.

This is the final book in the Bridget series, even though it backtracks and takes place before the events of the third book, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Bridget is back in Singleton again after the end of her engagement to Mark Darcy. She is joined there by her friends Shazza (my other spirit animal by the way) and Tom (he had a song back in the '80s, if you remember).

She is the godmother to 437 children and is made the joint godparent, with Darcy, to a friend's baby. With jokes and of course wine, she and Darcy reignite their spark and end up in bed together, wondering how it had all gone so horribly wrong. Of course well-meaning friends put an end to this the next day and Darcy withdraws himself from Bridget's life, again.

As is Bridget's way, she finds herself at a publicity event, and who should be there but Mr Daniel Cleaver? She's still smarting over not hearing from Mark and drunkenly decides that a night with Daniel might not be such a bad idea. After a few weeks of thinking she's peri menopausal and that she's a barren, washed up, fat singleton for life, she discovers she's pregnant.

Hilarity then ensues as she has to tell the gents and it rolls from there. One of the best characters in the book is Bridget's gynaecologist/obstetrician, who reminds Bridget that she can do this on her own. A great book, and definitely fun. Made me love Bridget even more, just as she is.
