REVEALED: The 10 worst stretches of road in Australia

TWO stretches of Bruce Hwy between Mackay and Proserpine have again been named among the most dangerous sections of road in the country, with 19 deaths in five years.

The latest Australian Road Assessment Program report identified sections of the Bruce Hwy which had some of the highest combined crash risk ratings of major roads across the nation.

RACQ said the Bruce Hwy accounted for 11 of 21 high-risk sections of national highway identified in Queensland.

RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner said the Bruce Hwy between Sarina and Mackay was named in the top 10 most dangerous sections in Australia.

"The two sections of Bruce Hwy between Sarina to Mackay and Mackay to Proserpine recorded 245 casualty crashes and 19 deaths during the 2010 to 2014 reporting period," Mr Turner said.

"The section of Bruce Hwy between Mt Larcom and Rockhampton also rates poorly with 102 casualty crashes and 10 deaths.

"We welcome the significant investment in the Bruce Hwy over the past few years, but we're asking the Federal and State governments to fast-track the 10-year program of works to deliver safer roads sooner."

Mr Turner said the safety improvements required on the Bruce Hwy included:

Safety barriers or removal of roadside hazards

Shoulder widening

Intersection improvements (protected right turn lanes)

Overtaking lanes or additional lanes

Audio tactile line markings (rumble strips)
