Revamp plan underway for Ballina boat harbour

THE Martin St boat harbour precinct at Ballina is one step closer to a revamp with the preparation of a draft masterplan now under way.

Starting early this year, the project by Ballina Shire Council has responded to calls for upgrades.

Red Belly Landscape Architecture + Urban Design are the consultants for the project.

Landscape architect Garry Murray said the plan aimed to offer a more practical use of space in the area, which was "in need of renovation".

"We want to create better access along the whole foreshore which is currently denied because of the boat harbour and buildings," he said.

"There's poor parking, the parklands are under-utilised and the place isn't very welcoming."

The project still has a way to go, with a final master plan and a number of public reviews on the way to allow the community to make recommendations.

Locals will soon have a chance to review the work undertaken so far.

An information session will be held from 3pm on July 14 at the Richmond Room in Ballina.
