Retro-caravaners head off in little blue round thing
PAUL Connolly needed something to do while wife Alma went trekking in Spain for seven weeks so he built a replica 1948 caravan.
Now the Evans Head couple have packed their belongings for a six-week trip up to Cairns then down to Canberra as part of the Museum of the Long Weekend.
"We found out about the event from the Vintage Caravan Magazine," Alma said.
"It's for people who have worked hard and want to enjoy life."
On the October long weekend, like-minded vintage-caravan owners will set up on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin, open their caravans to the public and meet interesting people.
"Once we've gone to Cairns we will come back and pass through Lismore," Paul said. "We will have covered about 6000kms by the time we have finished."
The couple will be living in a space of only 10 x 6 feet so have had to improvise on storage.
"The esky is under one of the seats, the pantry is a cupboard under one bed and the wine rack has been built into the base of the other bed," Paul said lifting the mattress and pulling out a bottle of scotch from its snug home.
There is even hanging space for a couple of Alma's retro 50s-style dresses. The sink and stove top pull out from the side of the caravan.
The couple will tow their mobile home with a 1965 HD Holden to complete the retro look.
