Retreat from fatigue

PULL in, rest up, have a coffee and then get those big wheels rolling.

This is what Peak Downs Hwy motorists can do 24 hours a day now that the Epsom Retreat Hotel driver reviver area has officially opened.

The rest stop, Near Nebo, about 65km west of Mackay, was filled with about 40 truckies and a mix of representatives from police, ambulance and the Department of Main Roads.

The rest stop was a key tool to saving lives on the deadly Peak Downs Hwy, RAAG safety co-ordinator Graeme Ransley said yesterday.

"Owners of the Epsom Retreat Hotel maintain the area, so that's mowing the grass and looking after the amenities. Isaac Regional Council has provided some sun shade areas and Main Roads built turning lanes into the rest area," he said.

"Basically now, even if it's 3am, drivers can pull in here and have a cup of coffee - there are no excuses."

The official opening of the 24 hour rest stop also coincided with another RAAG truckie toolbox meeting yesterday. The meeting gave truckies the latest information on changes to new driver workbooks.

"In the past, it was only drivers who were travelling more than 200km to their destination, now it's 100km."

Do you think we need more rest stops around Mackay?
