Retail looks to be bouncing back with sales on the increase

RETAIL turnover rose almost 1% in January this year, driven mainly by a 2.6% rise in "other retailing", across leisure, recreational, entertainment and book sales among other products.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, released on Tuesday, showed retail turnover rose 0.9% in January up 2.5% on the same month in 2012, and up from a 0.4% fall in December last year.

Growth in retail turnover was found mainly in the 'other' category - recreational, entertainment and pharmaceutical products - while household goods retailing rose 1.3%, restaurants up 1% and food retailing up 0.3% in January.

The biggest contributing state to the growth was New South Wales, up 1.3%; followed by Victoria, up 1%; and Queensland, up 0.9%.
