Man died near illegal doof party

A WADEVILLE man is dead following an illegal doof party on a Kyogle Road property near Nimbin over the weekend.

Dennis Whittaker, 51, was killed after being hit by a car on Kyogle Road on Saturday night after apparently being refused entry to the party.

Angry residents called The Northern Star yesterday upset the party went ahead after they repeatedly forewarned police and the Kyogle Council.

An estimated 2000 people attended, leaving residents complaining of loud music, litter, human excrement and traffic chaos.

Congested roads prevented ambulance access to the party after a French backpacker was apparently bashed with a bottle.

The Rural Fire Service’s driveway was blocked all night.

Richmond Local Area Command crime manager Inspector Greg Moore described the organisers’ actions as disgraceful and said police did their upmost to manage the risk.

According to residents, the music didn’t start until a large number of people were on the property, leaving police with few options.

“It’s not a simple case of closing it down,” said Insp Moore, who explained police were not about to push thousands of potentially drug and alcohol-affected revellers back on to the road and put the community at greater risk.

“Police were well aware of the plans and liaised with Kyogle Shire Council to make sure banning orders were issued.”

Organisers flouted the orders and now face large fines if council’s prosecution is successful.

Kyogle Shire Council general manager Arthur Piggott said council officers took sound level readings during the event and would be ‘vigorously pursuing’ the organisers, and possibly the landowners, through the courts.

Investigations are continuing and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
