Region needs better marketing campaign

NO ONE could argue against the fact that the Northern Rivers region is one of the most spectacularly beautiful parts of the world with unparalleled beaches, rainforests, rivers and mountains.

The fact that many people in Australia let alone the rest of the world struggle to even know about us though is a travesty.

Unfortunately the term Northern Rivers is not a strong enough nor tactical enough tourism brand.

It is more a geographic term - from a bygone colonial era. It just doesn't cut it as a tourism brand for it automatically excludes all places north from here as one example.

Ask someone in Queensland where Northern Rivers is and they may answer the Jardine or wherever.

Sadly, and even worse, ask just about anyone outside the region - even in the tourism industry in NSW - and they don't know where we are either.

The Regional Advisory Council that guides the Northern Rivers - NSW Business Chamber has wrestled with this issue for some time now and is yet to arrive at a better suggestion than the Green Coast because of the myriad of marketing opportunities it presents.

We adjoin the number one tourist region in Australia yet we don't capitalise on it. The Green Coast is everything the Gold Coast is not and vice versa. They may have the top 5 theme parks in Australia but we can claim the 5 best 'natural' theme parks in Australia. And so on.

Which is a better tourism brand for our region?
