Reds and Brumbies fight for spot at top of Aussie Conference

WALLABIES coach Robbie Deans may have lit the fuse to ignite the Super Rugby showdown between the Queensland Reds and ACT Brumbies in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Only seven Reds players received an invite from Deans to attend the two-day Wallabies camp in Sydney, while 11 Brumbies, including six uncapped at international level, got the nod.

Queensland prop Greg Holmes was one who missed out.

He was sure the selection snubbings of some of his teammates would add more spice to the clash between the table-topping Brumbies and fourth-placed Reds.

"I would have thought we would have had more players than we did in there," the 13 Test representative said.

The Reds warmed up for the blockbuster by beating defending champion, the Chiefs, 31-23 in Hamilton.

Winger Rod Davies scored two tries, but with Digby Ioane set to return, he could find himself on the bench as the Reds bid to avenge a 24-6 defeat against the Brumbies during the season-opener in Canberra.

If the Reds win, they will replace the Brumbies on top of the Australian Conference.
