A TRINITY Beach resident almost came face-to-face with a venomous snake while cleaning up the garden.

A red-bellied black snake had been snoozing underneath some palm fronds in the back yard when it was disturbed.

"They were just getting rid of the fronds … and the snake struck out," Cairns Snake Catcher Matthew Hagan (above) said.

Luckily for the Torokina St resident, Mr Hagan lived just down the road.

"Most people in Far North Queensland garden in their thongs and shorts," he said. "Just serves as a warning … it's always best to do your gardening in long pants and closed in shoes."

With warmer weather, Mr Hagan has been kept busy.

"A lot of different species of snakes were out and about," he said.

Another family came across a scrub python with her eggs.

"Pythons are the only snakes that actually look after their eggs, the rest abandon them," Mr Hagan said.
