Redback spiders for sale

DEADLY Redback spiders have been advertised for sale as a great pet for kids on a Northern Rivers based Facebook page.

Leroy Schneider posted the advertisement FOR SALE RED BACK BABIES about midnight on Tuesday.

"Pure bred Australian red back (latrodectus hasselti)," he posted.

"Great pet.

"Parents available for inspection.

"Starter cage provided.

"Great first pet for kids interested in wildlife." 

In an attempt to limit his liability, Mr Schneider posted the following.

"I take no responsibility for injury including death."

Redback details

Redback and Funnel Web spider bites are the only spiders to have killed people in Australia, according to the Australian Museum.

An effective antivenom for Redback Spiders was introduced in 1956.

Approximately 2000 people are bitten each year by Redback Spiders, according to the Australian Museum.

A Department of Environment and Heritage spokesman is investigating whether it is illegal to sell Redback spiders.
