New trash collector caught failing to recycle

SUNSHINE Coast Council's new rubbish collection company has been caught loading the contents of recycling bins in with general waste.

Diddillibah resident Debbie Muffet (pictured right) was relieved to see her bins were being collected, four days after the due date.

But her relief quickly turned to despair when she saw the rubbish collection truck pick up her recycling bin and empty it into the general waste.

She believed 360 homes got the same treatment.

Ms Muffet said when she contacted council, she was advised not to "cause waves" as the new service provider, Remondis, had only just started on the job.

WHAT'S MAKING NEWS TODAY

Hundreds of residents contacted the Daily early this week about problems with their domestic pick-ups since Remondis took over from J.J. Richards. In one instance, 30 bins were not emptied for two weeks.

Ms Muffet was told by the council she would not get a response on the issue as there had "been so many complaints".

Hours after the Daily made inquiries, however, a council waste officer contacted Ms Muffet and said he had made the mistake.

"He told me it wasn't Remondis who had authorised it, but he had done it on his own accord," she said.

A council spokeswoman said a "small number of recycling and waste bins were identified as being missed in a rural residential street".

"To help get the service schedules back on track in that area, the general waste truck attended to the missed services," she said.

"This is not a normal practice and was only undertak-en in urgent response to address the missed services."

Remondis referred the Daily to council for comment.
