Drag racing returns to Northern Rivers with new association

DRAG racing in the region has been reborn with the formation of the Northern Rivers Drag Racing Association.

The rebirth comes after former promoter Roger Wood pulled the pin early this year to spend more time with his family.

Newly elected NRDRA secretary Rob Cairns said the organisation was registered and a committee elected at the first meeting two weeks ago.

"Greg Brown was elected president, Stephen Williams vice-president and Catherine Arbinitis is the treasurer," he said.

"Roger Wood came to the meeting and said he is happy to work with us for the first few meetings to help things run smoothly."

A meeting will be held at the Casino RSM Club this Saturday at 2pm to progress toward the first race meeting.

"All going well we hope to hold our first event in April, and in the future we plan to hold 10 events per year between March and December," Mr Cairns said.

While the essence of the event will always be the drags, Mr Cairns said they hoped to attract trade stalls, hold a show and shine, a burnout competition and make Summerland Drags a more family friendly day out.

"We still want to work with the Casino Lions Club and the Casino Men's Shed, who have been great supporters, but we are also looking to get other businesses and sponsors involved," he said.

Other planned tweaks include LCD screens where competitors can see who won each race and their times, plus reciprocal arrangements with Warwick Dragway and Willowbank Raceway.

"We hope to attract competitors from the Warwick and Willowbank clubs in south-east Queensland to boost competitor numbers," Mr Cairns said.
