Rebate may be a call away after floods took out CQ lines

A CHANCE inquiry by Rockhampton's Michele Bradbury may have triggered an avalanche of rebates to Telstra's 80,000 customers in the region.

Mrs Bradbury, after ringing Telstra about another matter, thought she would ask about a possible rebate after her phone was cut off during the January flash floods.

The Glendale resident told the telco she was disappointed to see she had been charged the full amount on her bill after loss of service over the Australia Day weekend.

"The Telstra lady asked if I could explain the outages and I told her about the fact that we had no landlines, mobiles or internet for over 36 hours," she said. "The lady then worked out the amount I would be credited and said there would be a refund on my next bill."

The Glendale resident was credited $10 for the time she was without a phone.

She said while $10 might not be much, other people could have been without service for longer and could get more money back.

"I suggest everyone give Telstra a call and discuss their own situation, after all, nothing ventured, nothing gained."

The damage to Telstra cables resulted in the loss of most landline and broadband services in Mackay, Cairns, Rockhampton, Townsville, Mount Isa and Gladstone, affecting hundreds of thousands of customers.

A Telstra spokesperson said a Disaster Relief Program was in place since the floods and customers can find out about the relief program by calling them up.

But the information on their relief program won't be showing up on your bill anytime soon.

"It's very difficult to target bills to a specific area, we do rely heavily on letting stakeholders know, local council and emergency services. Given the boundaries that we're a large provider of services to Australians, we touch customers with Foxtel, broadband, landlines and mobiles, we could have anywhere from 80,000 customers."
