Reakes plays part in victory

KNOCKROW cricketer Angela Reakes is on top of the world after her team the NSW Breakers defeated Victoria by 59 runs in the final of the Women’s National Cricket League atthe MCG on Saturday.

The Breakers set an imposing 207-run target from their allotted 50 overs then bowled out the home side for 147, handing the NSW women a remarkable 12th national title in the WNCL’s 14th season.

NSW captain Lisa Sthalekar, who made 49 from 57 balls, praised her side and singled out Reakes for her efforts with the ball.

“I’m very proud of all the girls,” she said.

“Since I first started captaining there’s been a huge changeover and for each girl to come in and make their mark, it’s a real credit to them.

“I think 200 is a psychological number in a final. It’s a fair bit of runs to get so credit to our bowlers, Erin (Osborne) and Ange (Reakes), who really tied them down in the middle.”

Reakes bowled six overs, conceded 27 runs and snared the Vics’ second-highest scorer Jess Cameron, breaking up a partnership that yielded 45 runs and from which the Victorians never fully recovered.
