OPINION: Reach out to those who need help this Christmas

ON Saturday night I sat at home and read an internet thread that asked people to sum up their life in one word.

Many people simply said blessed.

Blessed for their health, happiness, because they had survived cancer, or because of their children.

Or simply because they had a roof over their heads.

In among the happy posts was one man whose words broke my heart.

He said his wife and children had left him and he was contemplating suicide.

The holidays can make people who are already lonely feel even more alone.

They can add an additional burden to those who are already having a difficult time.

I was heartened to see dozens of comments on his post, urging him to seek help, not to give up.

Of course there were also the obligatory trolls who encouraged him, with one even suggesting a way for him to have a "painless death".

The internet often shows the best and worst of human nature and this case was no different.

I can only point out that there is no such thing as a painless death when it comes to suicide.

The pain simply gets passed on to loved ones, who will be left mourning a senseless loss.

If you are feeling depressed or lonely this Christmas, please reach out to someone.

You are not alone.

There are so many people in this community who can offer friendship and support.

It is incumbent on all of us to make sure those around us know they are loved and cared for all year round.

I implore those who suffer from mental illness - don't lose your life over a moment of despair.

Seek help today.
