WITH concerns about the availability of Japanese and Fijian-speaking interpreters, the trial of a Jiggi man accused of raping a Japanese backpacker at Byron Bay will now be heard in Sydney District Court and not Lismore.

The trial of Rupeni Davui had been set for Lismore District Court on Monday.

Despite the objections of defence counsel Megan Cusack, Judge James Black said he would allow the Crown’s application for the change in venue.
