Ramanauskas urges Roughead not to overdo it

AFL: Adam Ramanauskas has warned Hawthorn fans not to expect too much from Jarryd Roughead as the forward continues his battle against melanoma.

Roughead returned to the training ground this week after missing all of last season to treat his cancer.

Some are hoping the big forward can return to action in round one of the 2017 campaign but former Bomber Ramanauskas, who fought back from a tumour in 2003 to return to the AFL, said Roughead's return to training did not mean he would necessarily be back playing any time soon.

"What can happen, if he pushes it too hard, too early, that can be a major setback for weeks at a time, not just a day or two,” Ramanauskas told RSN radio.

"I think he's out there, he's enjoying training and he's seeing how it goes.

"There's a lot of issues around getting your heart rate too elevated in the early stages of his recovery. He'll need to be very, very mindful of that.”
